Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo when I was visiting New Orleans, Louisiana, earlier this year (May).

Time

The photo was taken around mid day I'd say.

Lighting

Just natural light.

Equipment

I've used my Olympus Omd-Em5 and a Panasonic prime 25mm lens. No other lightnings were involved. So far in my photography experience I've only been doing candid street photography, so my Olympus body and my two lenses are all the gear I ever use.

Inspiration

I enjoy people more than anything else when it comes to the photos I take. People have stories and their faces convey emotions, and for me, a photo is only worth taking if it make the viewer feel. Anything. When I see a person that seems like he has a story worth telling I try to listen. The man in this photo was sitting on one of the main streets of New Orleans' French Quarter. He was sitting there with a wide Fedore on his head, 20 colorful ball neckleses and a bucket. I remember mostly one thing from my conversation with him. I remember him telling me that back in the 80's, he was the first man covered in silver performing in the streets of NOLA - "Silverman". "What is your name tho?" I asked him. "It's silverman, and that is all you need to know". I asked him if I could take his photograph before I took it. You always should when taking a portrait, if you ask me. First of all, respect the person's privacy, and second of all, the difference between a portrait taken from a 20 cm distance or a 20 meters distance is visible. IMO the closer you get the more emotion the photo would convey. After taking about two photos, I looked at them but wasn't inspired. They didn't look candid and there was no real emotion in them, so I kept taking about three or four more from my waist line while still talking to Silverman. That's when I got this one.

Editing

Oh YES I DO. Post proccesing is my favorite part. Getting a well composed shot is like getting a clean canvas a brush and a color palette - it's time to start painting. Many times a photo would go through four or five completely different cycles of proccessing, each gives a completely different feeling to the photo. You can express your artistic nature in many different areas and stages in photography. For me, compositing a candid scene and post-proccesing my RAWs is where I express myself.

In my camera bag

All I ever carry is my Olynpus omd em5, my Lumix 25mm f/1.4 prime (my favorite one two use, rarly leaves my camera) and my 12-50 f/3.5 M. Zuiko kit lens. I'm looking at buying a new wide aperture prime around 75mm.

Feedback

Talk to people, get to know them, don't be afraid to ask for a photo, better after some small talk. Tell them how interesting they look, that's why you want to take a photo of them after, right?
