Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in Waikiki, Oahu. It is just a few hundred feet offshore. The busy hustle of Waikiki is not apparent in this photo, which is what I wad going for.

Time

This photo is taken at my favorite time of day to shoot: sunset. The nice soft light combines with the rich, vibrant colors of the setting sun help make this photo special.

Lighting

I wanted this photo to be a silhouette showing the highlighted curves of the girl, but yet still have enough light on her to make sure that the colors do not look dull and faded. There was no additional light source besides the sun for this photo.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 1DX with a 35mm f/2 lens. The camera is housed in a custom water housing, which allows me to go completely underwater and bash the camera around in the water - all without worrying about it getting damaged.

Inspiration

I was actually shooting this for a corporate shoot (for a snorkel company) and the model wanted a break to shoot some "selfies" of her, so this is the result.

Editing

Basic post processing that involved brightness, curves, vibrance, and a gradient to help lighten up the bottom part of the image. Nothing very complex. The lighting was good so it didn't require that much editing.

In my camera bag

My equipment is always changing for the different types of shoots. For underwater, I have my 1dx and normally a 16-35mm lens. For landscape I normally have my A7r II with a 16-35mm lens. It all depends on what I am shooting, but essentially I always have a camera body and a wide angle and a short zoom (16-35 and 24-70)

Feedback

Getting photos underwater requires some very specialized equipment. Housings can be very expensive to get. Mine new costs well over 2k for the housing alone. The best thing to do is get a basic setup on craigslist. Sometimes people are selling their entire kit of equipment for cheap (under $1k) and that will have a body with a lens and the housing. If that is out of your budget, you can either use a GoPro or your phone in a Watershot Housing. The Watershot Housing is the cheapest option that can have different lenses onto your cell phone.
