Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the sunroom of my home. Abby loves to lay in the sun coming through the patio doors.

Time

This photo was taken in the late morning about 11:00 am. I laid on the floor in front of her in hopes of getting a good shot of those big Bulldog eyes but she hates being photographed and avoids eye contact. In this instance, that sad far away look is better than I ever hoped for. I was fortunate to get the shot before she ran away from me.

Lighting

The sun coming through the patio door perfectly enhanced her bulldog wrinkles by creating shadows in all the right places

Equipment

Canon 70D with the infamous Nifty Fifty (50mm) lens :)

Inspiration

Actually the sun shining through and the shadow of her initially got my attention then I got closer and saw how it enhanced her features so nicely.

Editing

Yes, some. If memory serves, I turned down the highlights when I decided to make her features the focus of the shot. I applied a general enhance preset in Lightroom and cropped slightly.

In my camera bag

My must haves are my Tamron 90mm macro, my Yongnuo 50mm and/or my Canon 55-200 US telephoto and Tamron 70-300mm telephoto depending on my destination; extra battery, and remote. And my lens cleaning supplies.

Feedback

Patience is number 1. Also be as ready as possible. I have learned that making sure your subject composition and camera settings are optimal are the key to great clear photos especially when shooting pets. They speak to you with their eyes and capturing their expression is very rewarding. Be calm as well. If at first you don't succeed, try again another time. I have many snout shots from when she got up to come and lick my face or turned away because she's camera shy.
