Location
This picture was taken in April on Dune island - small island near little bigger Helgoland island. These small islands in the northern sea are part of Germany.Time
It was right before sunset (at 7pm.) and the low sun nicely lit through the sand around the seal.Lighting
I like the lower warmer sun (sunrise, sunset) for nature photography, except warmer colours it gives more space for work with light direction and shadows can give more space feeling to the picture.Equipment
Canon 7D with Canon 70-200/2,8 lens, photo was taken without flash or tripodInspiration
We were on Dune to take pictures of seals and there was a lot of opportunities. There is about 600 seals on the island. This picture was taken on our walk around the island on our first day of stay. We were walking without tripods, just to see how the island is looks like and picking place for next day shooting. I meet this seal by mistake - we were trying not to disturb these nice animals. But this one was sleeping covered with the sand and I didn’t see it before it wake up. So I sit on nearby rock, with my camera ready and was watching how it was waking up. Then the seal shakes to take sand down and I was prepared for the shot.Editing
I have done only some small crop any very little of curves adjustment. In my camera bag
When I am shooting animals, which can be approach in a few meters distance, than I take two cameras (both Canon 7D) one with 70-200/2,8 for shots with some environment or closer ones and one with 300/4 or 400/5,6 for shots from greater distance.Feedback
Pick locations with animals used to people. Take time and spend a few days with them - watch them in different light, examine their behaviour etc. Be ready, have luck.
