Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of the Torre Mare Nostrum building, its the headquarter of the Gas Natural Company, Barcelona, Spain. I only had one day off during a business meeting so I made a list of buildings in Barcelona to go to. This one was on top of the list.

Time

It was taken at 13:11pm on the 25th of September 2015. Usually not the best time to make pictures because of the hard lighting. But I had only one day and I needed to visit some more buildings.

Lighting

I have a sort of habit when making pictures of buildings. I first walk around it (if possible) to see what is happening with the light. In this case the sun was very high because of the time of day. I did have the possibility the walk around the building very close to it, when i got in to the shadow I noticed that the top of the building was reflecting the light very nice in the opposite building.

Equipment

This image is shot with a Nikon D7100 and my favorite lens for this kind of photography, the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8

Inspiration

I usually try to do some investigation before visiting a city. I knew that there where a lot of modern buildings in Barcelona. So I looked it up on the internet and ended up on the website of ArchDaily. They have a Architecture City Guide from the biggest cities in the world. This is where I made my list of buildings to visit.

Editing

Yes of course i did ;-) In this case I used Lightroom for the basics like sharpening, contrast, noise reduction enz. Then used Silver FX Pro 2 for the black and white conversion and used the red filter to get the blue sky black which makes a great contrast with the clouds behind the right tower.

In my camera bag

If possibly I bring everything, like any photographer :-) For me that means, my Lowepro Protactic backpack which is great when walking around for a full day with all the equipment. Its packed with a wide-angle lens Tokina 11-16mm, a telezoom Nikkor 80-200mm, a short zoom Nikkor 18-70mm and a Nikkor 50mm. I use a 3 legged thing tripod, the Hahnel Captur wireless remote and a extra battery, B+W pola filter, ND110 grey filter and 702 graduated filter. Some cleaning stuff like a dust blower and cleaning tissues. My lunch and a bottle of water.

Feedback

If you're in to Architecture Photography, try to take the time to do some investigation before visiting a city, for example I used the Archdaily City Guide to pick out some beautiful buildings and used it to make the best route. Then take the time to walk around the building. Visit website's like Viewbug to see what others did with the buildings you want to visit and get some inspiration from them. For the rest I always try to have a fun day, taking time for a cup of coffee or have a nice lunch. ;-)
