This is one of many versions of the Crater that we captured in Sept. 2015.
We used different editing techniques and the clouds moved in very fast; so we
were able to capture different perspectives with the shadows.

Location
This photo along with a few others were taken at the summit (10,004ft) of the Haleakala Crater inside the Haleakala Crater National Park on the Island of Maui.Time
We wanted to actually view the crater itself, so we went up mid morning. We did not go with the crowds early in the morning. Lucky for us, there was very heavy cloud cover that day.Lighting
We got very lucky due to the heavy cloud cover, that helped pull out the colors of the crater. If it had been full sun, we never would have captured the images like we did. The clouds did come in quick, so we didn't have much time. At one point, the clouds were so heavy we couldn't see well enough to drive so we had to wait it out.Equipment
All shots that day were handheld, natural light only. We always use a UV filter with our Sigma 18 - 250mm lens on our Sony A77.Inspiration
This was our #1 spot we wanted to see on our visit to Maui. This was our first trip to the Hawaiian Islands and the Haleakala Crater was the top on our list for photography. Like I said before though, we didn't want to visit early in the morning. We wanted to see the real crater and hoped we would be lucky enough to capture the amazing colors.Editing
Yes, we did use a slight HDR filter and enhanced colors and detail. In my camera bag
On this vacation we took along: Sony A77 & Sony A580 (which we ruined at the beach) Sigma 150 - 500, Sigma 18 - 250, Sony kit 18 - 55mm; Tripod, lens filters, and extra batteries/SD cards.Feedback
Well, this is difficult because we just got plain lucky with the clouds. So we would say watch the weather report to see if there will be clouds/ Heavy Clouds. And sure go see the sunrise, but stay much later in the day and see the crater for the crater. It truly does look like what many imagine the planet Mars might look like, it is an amazing experience like no other on Earth.
