Yeah the landscape doesn't disappoint! we hiked to the top rather then take the jeeps but it was still worth it!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was after a strenuous 5-hour hike to the summit of Mount Bromo, Indonesia. The viewing platform had hundreds of tourists crowding the shot, but my 6 foot 5" height proved beneficial in getting above. I didn't rush myself, despite time running out I took a deep breath and snapped it I felt it was right.

Time

This photo is my pride and joy, partly for the beautiful result, but mostly from the effort and time, it took to get to the location. I started the hike at midnight, and this picture is 5 hours later. I had forgotten my tripod back in Australia, so a steady hand was needed – very difficult when running off 3 hours sleep.

Lighting

Lighting was hard. The sun rose quickly, so the shutter speed was always changing, and the lack of tripod forced me to improvise. I wanted to put across all the colours my eyes were seeing and capture the warmth that the volcano was producing. I tried to take everyone on the adventure I was on.

Equipment

I used a Canon 600D body with a Canon 24-105mm F/4 lens with attached UV filter.

Inspiration

I've always scouted Instagram pages and national geographic for landscape inspiration. I always dreamed of being the one to take these photos, and I knew Indonesia held these fantastic views. I'm always in awe of the pictures others take and their locations, and every day I find inspiration from these artists.

Editing

I brought forth a lot of the colours and made them richer in Adobe Lightroom 5; however, everything I did was already there – I just made them show their true colours. Other than that, the image spoke for itself and little changed.

In my camera bag

I always carry around my Canon 50mm 1.8 lens which is fantastic for low light and portrait photography; it's always been an essential part of my bag. I also couldn't go anywhere without my Canon 24-105mm lens – its amazing for the landscapes (quality and size wise). Then there's the general spare batteries, Sd Cards, cleaning equipment and much-needed snacks haha. Oh, I couldn't forget my Benro travel tripod for that superb stability. I love my kit.

Feedback

Early Indonesian mornings up Mount Bromo are very cold – ironic. Make sure you're as prepared as possible because being cold can take your mind off the task at hand. Take a deep breath and relax, if you rush the shot it will cause silly mistakes that you won't pick up until it's too late. Most of all, though, enjoy yourself. The more fun you have, the more relaxed you'll be and the better the shot. Take advantage of early mornings or late evenings as those colours will blow you away and enrich your shot. Be patient, take the shot and have FUN!
