Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during Dallas Blooms at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Time

It was mid morning.

Lighting

It had rained heavily the night before and was still quite grey and overcast.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a little Canon Rebel T2i and a 100 mm macro. No tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

I had spent the morning focused on shooting macro images. When I came across the tulips, I was struck by the sea of endless color. It reminded me of a Monet painting. The tulips were just coming into their prime and I thought they were too beautiful not to capture. I didn't even take time to change lenses.

Editing

I didn't have to do much to this photo. A little exposure brightening and a bit of sharpening.

In my camera bag

I never leave home without my Canon 7D body, Rebel T2i body, 100 mm macro, 50 mm prime, 300 mm telephoto, and a monopod.

Feedback

First, I would say to take the shots where they come. This was unplanned and spontaneous. Second, I used a narrow depth of field and focused on a single bloom instead of trying to capture the expanse of flowers as a whole. This created a wonderful blurring effect while also preserving the integrity of the landscape.
