Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my garden, Gaga's Garden in Central Illinois, about one hour from St. Louis. It's a hybrid tea rose bred by Tom Carruth, known as the 'King of Roses'. Tom Carruth has created more All-America winning roses than any other living hybridizer. It was introduced by Week's Roses, and Weeks Roses sent it as a bare root rose bush for me to plant, grow and photograph. Every rose this rose bush produces is as beautiful as the voice its famous namesake 'Neil Diamond' is so famous for.

Time

The picture of 'Neil Diamond' hybrid tea rose was taken in natural light in the morning.

Lighting

Lighting is everything when you are taking pictures of roses. I've taken pictures of the exact same candelabra of roses throughout the day to show how the color of the very same rose changes in natural lighting. For example I've taken photos of a pale pink spray of rose in morning light that turn almost coral in afternoon lighting. Natural lightings effect on the color of roses is a study of fascination for me, since colors are written in catalog description like a fine wine in catalogs.

Equipment

The camera is a Canon Rebel with the Canon Macro Lens EF 100 MM. I do use a tripod.

Inspiration

When I take a picture of the garden and roses, its not a matter of; shall I take the picture; I feel its a compulsion. Each time I see a rose at a stage of bloom like 'Neil Diamond' in this perfect form, it will never be seen like this again. This rare beauty is meant to be shared with you and the world. A beauty of such magnitude is a grave responsibility revealed to me. It is my responsibility to share it with you or it will be lost forever.

Editing

My believe is to try and do as little post-processing as possible. I work with the natural lighting as much as I can.

In my camera bag

My Canon, the 100 mm, and I purchased the Canon EF 100MM f/2.8L Macro IS USM which I am learning more about using.

Feedback

The best advice I can give you is the advice given to me. Read your camera's manual and use your tripod.
