Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the center of Montréal on a cold winter's day. I was doing a 365-day project (one picture per day for a year), so I was exploring the city trying to capture moment like that.

Time

This was taken at the end of March, around 5pm. The sun had started to set, casting dramatic shadows on the buildings.

Lighting

This structure and the sun were in perfect alignment. I guess it's all about timing. The subject was the light, the sun. So I tried to play with that light, and the reflections it created on the glass.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D800 by hand, with a Tamron Zoom 24-70mm f/2,8. Here, I was using the 24mm at f/11 to create a sharp image.

Inspiration

I think it was the light more than anything. It had something magical that was a perfect moment. The architecture itself was also interesting; its shapes and lines that focused the eye right in the middle.

Editing

Yes. I color corrected to boost the yellows and blues, adding contrast and pushing the vibrance. I'm not an architectural photographer, so I wanted to have something a little surreal and play with perception. I added distortion to the image to mess with the rigid lines of the building. I wanted to guide the viewer's eye toward the center of the picture.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D800 with a Nikon 50mm f/1,4 that I love so much. Most of my shots are done with this lens. I also have a Tamron Zoom 24-70mm f/2,8 for moments like this. It's a great basic lens but a little heavy when I'm walking around, exploring neighborhoods.

Feedback

Always be aware of the environment you're in. Light is a very important thing; look at where the shadows are and play with it. Of course, find the lines that are going to capture and trap the eye of the viewer. Ideally, you get them to fall into your picture.
