Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver BC. This particular is used by many photographers for it's amazing water and Island views.

Time

This was one of first photos I took using ND filters to shoot daytime long exposure. This was a morning shot around 10 am. The tide was heading out so I needed to get the shot before I lot the movement in the water.

Lighting

I was really hoping to capture great cloud movement this day but the weather was not playing in my favour. I do love how the water was captured with a little cloud movement in the distance. I had to climb down in between two rock faces to this little ting spot that you can shoot from when the tide is out. Only way to capture this angle. This is a 8 minute exposure using 16 stops of ND.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon 5D MKII, Manfrotto tripod with ball head and a canon remote trigger so I don't upset the shot with movement. Two B+W ND filters stacked for 16 stops and my 24-105 Canon lens.

Inspiration

I love the movement captured in long exposure for day and night shots. I loved the peace and darkness of this shot. It shows the calm but anger at the same time. I am a big fan of black and white as well.

Editing

I do all my post in Lightroom and then in NIK Silver Efex for this photo. They both are amazing software that allowed me to clean-up and high a few areas in the photo and make them pop.

In my camera bag

I am a simple shoot and I don't carry much. My Canon 5D MK II 24-105, 50mm and on occasion 85mm prime.

Feedback

Patience and experimentation. You can work all day and maybe only get 1 shot, sometimes none that you like. You need to experiment with exposure times when it comes to ND filters as they are not consistent. I actually doubled the exposure time on this shot because the filters where not lining up with suggested exposure time. A tripod and a trigger is a must. Light bleeding into your camera is a potential issue so come prepared with black tape and even a black drop cloth that you can cover your camera with to eliminate any bleed. You won't know until your first few shots. Overcast is a must with movement to give you the beauty and depth you will be looking for.
