Location
I took this photo in Munich Germany, above a motorway in the south of the city.Time
I had planned to to take this photo just at sunset on a cold day shortly before winter, when the sun is at an low angle behind the model. It however turned out to be an overcast evening, and we didn't mange to get to the location in time. This made made me change the whole idea of the shoot.Lighting
Actually there is not much to say about lighting in this image. As it was an overcast day, there were not many hard shadows on the face of the model, and I didn't need to use any flashes. The headlight of the cars passing by create the mood and the story around the image. I'd chosen a fast f-stop on purpose, to keep the focus on the expression of the model and make the lights appear even bigger in the image.Equipment
I've used a Canon EOS 1D Mark ii with an 50mm f1.8 for the whole shoot, I didn't use any flashes or a tripod. As I think the images was taken at f2.5 and ISO 640.Inspiration
I'd seen the painting of an similar but more positive image of an painting in one of Canon's entry-level dslrs, showing two girls standing on a bridge looking down. The images caught my attention immediately and I'd thought about doing something similar, but with an totally different and much more powerful story and mood. To me the image is full of frustration and inner pain, i think this is what makes the image special. It does not create that positiv and happy feelings like so many others do. It's different.Editing
Yes, I've spent quite some time on color work in this image. I had this idea of a cold blue color, with warm headlights with an desaturated look. I did not want any other distracting color in the image. I did do a bit of retouching at the models face and as usual a bit of sharpening as well as noise reduction. In my camera bag
I normally carry my 1D Mark ii with a 75-300mm IS usm for fast action shots, because of the amazing AF and the fast burst rate, so I won't miss the moment. For landscapes and portrait or fashion stuff I often use my EOS 6D with either a 17-40mm f4L or a 50mm f1.8, because of the full-frame sensor, the amazing lowlight capability and the incredible image quality. I also bring a 28-70mm, MacBook or iPad, two flashes, remote, a tripod and some other smaller stuff.Feedback
If you decide to take a similar photo, you should have the image and its story in mind before you go for the shoot. Plan what to bring and where to go. Be ready when the light is just right and keep in mind, a beautiful sunset or environment might not fit to the story you're trying to tell. As I think wardrobe is not so important in this case, it however should not be distracting. The fast f-stop I used is on of the key-parts, that makes the image work. To me photography is all about the moment. My photo-gallery is a collection of moments, some are mine, some are others', what's yours?
