Can you believe her eyes? I took this image at 5.45 am in Yuma, AZ (if you have ever been to this place, you know this is the only time of the day when you are going to get nice even light in the desert :)

Location
I took this photo in Yuma, AZ. This is a small city that is surrounded completely by desert.Time
We met at 5.30 am to make sure we were ready to shoot in minutes before the sun came out. In Yuma, once the sun is out, even in the first few hours of light, it is so bright, and the desert such a good reflective surface, that the quality of light is not the best. This is why we only had about 20 minutes to get the shots we wanted.Lighting
I wanted very soft light, both on the model and the background. I wanted to avoid the very bright light of the desert and the warmth of the evening light. This is why I carefully decided on the time of the day to meet. I made her stand facing the direction from which the sun was rising, and I stood in front of her. I wanted to create a very even catchlight effect in her eyes.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark III and a 24-70 mm lens. I intentionally didn't use a reflector to avoid adding a reflection in her eyes, I wanted the color to be very even.Inspiration
I love closeups of people. especially when they convey the personality of the subject. I love honest portraits. This girl is strong and confident beyond her years.Editing
Unlike most of my work, this image did not require many hours of post processing. I smoothed her skin a bit, and added some blue to the image. That was it.In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. I always have a grey card, a tripod, and a reflector with me.Feedback
Choose the time of the day carefully! Sometimes you will have to wake up before sunrise, but trust me, it is so worth it! :) It is also important to know your equipment and choose your lens carefully, try to avoid lenses that create a lot of distortion. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING when photographing people is, take your time to build a relationship with the person you are photographing. Chances are they are nervous and they don't really know what they are doing. Talk to them, explain your process, be encouraging! When they trust you know how to do your job, and they start having fun, that is when the great images happen! :)
