GREAT capture...so hard to do the bulls as they move so fast! I have done some but it is hard to capture them without blur...gotta study up on it!

Well done, This type of action is so hard to capture. And the bull rider is so high it really was terrific to get the photo for him.

Location
Here in Raleigh, NC we have a well known rodeo that takes place during the summer once a week where riders come from all over the country to compete. I decided on a whim to grab my gear and see what I could make.Time
It's shortly after dusk. The only illumination was from the area lights.Lighting
Given the nature of the subject I didn't feel it was appropriate to use any kind of additional lighting so I had to deal with just the area lighting and a bit higher ISO.Equipment
While I'm now a Nikon shooter, this was was taken with my Canon 5D Mark III and the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lensInspiration
I went past the grandstands back to where the riders were, they clearly assumed I was supposed to be there given the professional camera and I didn't think to correct them. Hearing the talk and watching their presence would give the impression that they were in charge but as you can see from the image here, the bull had other ideas. I wanted to capture a moment that showed those two sides clashing for control.Editing
This photo is a few years old now so I can't recall exactly but I believe it was just simple color/exposure correction in Lightroom. In my camera bag
Now as a Nikon shooter I generally use the Nikon D810 (soon to add a D5 as the primary camera), 70-200mm 2.8, 85mm 1.4, 24mm 1.4, 24-70mm 2.8, 14-24mm 2.8, 105mm 2.8 (all Nikkor glass), and Phottix Mitros+ speedlights are the main pieces. Other additional important pieces of gear for jobs that I usually have with me are the Westcott Ice Light and the Phottix Indra 500 strobe.Feedback
You want to capture the peak of the movement which means trying to follow the flow and rhythm of the momentment. A half second before or after would have been an entirely different image and wouldn't have conveyed the power. Don't rely on just rapid shooting the scene because you can still find yourself shooting late or early. Wait and be patient and you'll get the shot you need!
