Location
This photo was taken in April in the Centerstage Showroom at the Belterra Casino and Resort in Florence, Indiana.Time
This was an accustical concert of Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt in a venue of about 1200 people.Lighting
The stage lighting was set for just the two performers. The stage had violet and blue backlighing, in addition to spot lights. This photo was taken during a solo with the spot lights just on Lovett.Equipment
This was shot with a Fujifilm X-T1, with a 18-135 mm lens, f/5.6, ISO 1000, 1/30, -2 ev, and no flash.Inspiration
My wife and I went to the concert to hear two of our favorite performers. Little did we know our tickets would place us in a position where I could shoot these great musicians unobtrusively. Lovett and Hiatt are both animated performers. Lovett was just starting a song and he was not moving, other than playing and singing. I wanted a portrait of him in this pose. A favorite photo and memory of that night.Editing
The post processing was first in Aperture where I sharpened, added definition, worked on shadows, and mid-contrast. Then I moved to Perfect Photo Suite 9 where I brought down some noise. In addition, I then made the photo black and white to give it a more dramatic portrait. In my camera bag
I carry the Fujifilm X-T1 with a 18-135 lens because it is small and unintrusive for street photography and small venues. I also, carry a Canon 7D for landscape and other general use. As for the lens I use a Canon EF 100-400 f4.5-5.6 ll USM, Canon EFS 10-22 EF-S 3.5-4.5 USM, and a Canon EF 50 mm 1.4.Feedback
I review the seating charts (which are usually on line) and try to purchase tickets which will give me an aisle seat. I do not take a flash so as to not bring attention to the camera. I try to wait for the cell phone flashes to finish. I set the camera on quiet and hope for the best.
