Behind The Lens

Location

This was a commissioned photograph taken for a Chicago local boutique shop, "FOURSIDED". The image was captured on the lake-front in Chicago.

Time

Just after sunset at night.

Lighting

There is no additional light source other than what you see in the image. The models were lit just enough by the sparklers. The sky was almost pitch black by the time the image was captured but a 30sec exposure brought out a nice deep blue color in the sky that cannot be seen by the human eye otherwise.

Equipment

Tripod is a must with these type of photos. Canon 7D + Canon L Series 35mm 1.4

Inspiration

FOURSIDED was advertising sparklers for summer wedding favors as part of their campaign. It just made sense to have models in wedding dresses showing off what you can do with sparklers on a wedding day.

Editing

Effects were accomplished all in-camera. With minor enhancements to color in Adobe Lightroom.

Feedback

Sparklers (the big kind), practice with a touch of patience and creative fun is all you need. The only thing stopping you from capturing something like this is you. My advice is to just go out and try it! It's a lot of fun and very rewarding when you first see the preview image on your display. Go out, have fun! The possibilities are endless. If you're worried about camera setting... see below, but don't follow them religiously. You will have to do a few test shots to make sure you have the background exposed the way you want it and you will have to adjust the following settings accordingly. The following settings is just a starting point: Aperture: f/11.0 ISO: 250 Exposure: 20/1
