Thank you... I was trying to create a "halo" effect around her too. This bridge is so fun.

Thanks. It is a wooden bridge that is lit at Christmas. The frame of lights behind her is the opposite side of the bridge and she is kneeling on the road. :)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of Morgan was taken at the entrance of a neighborhood in Evans, GA called Woodbridge. It is a very popular spot for photos as we do not have many wooden bridges around here. I just love rustic settings which take us back to simpler times.

Time

This was taken around 8PM EST in mid December. We chose that time of day for two reasons... (1) I wanted the Christmas lights to be our "light" and (2) everyone in the neighborhood would be home by then which would mean traffic would be minimal.

Lighting

I only used the Christmas lights as my light source.

Equipment

This image was shot with a Nikon D5100 on a tripod. I am a beginner so it doesn't get much more elaborate than that. For now at least. A photographer never stops learning technique.

Inspiration

Morgan is a girl from my church youth group. I saw her profile as perfectly framed in the bridge window, but when I lowered the tripod and found the lights on the window behind her to be somewhat like a halo, the vision instantly turned angelic for me. I remember gasping and telling myself "this will be an awesome shot".

Editing

I used an HDR overlay in Photoshop CS5 at about 40%.

In my camera bag

I never leave home without my two Nikons (D5100 and D600), Tamron SP 10-24mm lens (which I used here), and my Nikon 85mm lens. These are my favorite go to lenses. In addition, I always carry along a squeaker toy and duck whistle to grab the attention of children or pets, wipes for dirty faces, extra batteries, lens cleaner/cloth, extra cards, breath mints and business cards. ;)

Feedback

Whenever I go to a photo shoot I already have images in mind based on what I've seen from other photographers, but you have to make the shot your own. Look for unique structures to make your photos stand out among the others. Always notice what is behind the subject, mentally check jewelry clasps, collars, ties, etc. that might be turned wrong. But most importantly, look beyond the pose and snap some candids. The candids will likely be your favorites from the shoot as it will come across as the most natural. Let your subjects be themselves and have fun!!
