Behind The Lens

Location

Fairy Glen, Fortrose Scotland

Time

Afternoon

Lighting

Taken on an overcast day. The waterfall is in a woodland so was also undercover.

Equipment

Canon 7d with canon 15-85mm lens. Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I have visited the fairy glen many times as it a beautiful place to walk but this was the first chance I had to take some long exposures of the waterfall. The fallen leaves against the green moss and lichen was particularly striking and gave good foreground interest. I have a great interest in long exposure photography but usually shoot seascapes so this was a good opportunity to do something different.

Editing

I process my photos with Adobe photoshop elements to increase contrast and adjust saturation.

In my camera bag

I mainly shoot landscapes so a wide angle lens plus telephoto lens to capture wildlife. A tripod is essential as I enjoy long exposure photography plus various filters. I have a few different filters but love using the 10 stopper.

Feedback

Try to use foreground interest in your shot. I think it gives a photo perspective and leads you in to the waterfall or whatever it is you are shooting. Shoot from different angles and heights, don't be afraid to get down on the ground as you may find an interesting composition from that viewpoint.
