This shot was one of a rapid series taken of the breach from the deck of the National Geographic Expedition ship the ORION.We were on a expedition cruise of the Kimberly Coast Western Australia. The ship was ancored in Yampin Sound and it was our first morning at sea. July 22nd 2014.Time
We were alerted to the fact that there were whales off the port side by the Captan at about 7.00am . First all i saw were tails and fins and then they disappeared. We went to breakfast on the aft deck and I still had my camera with me. Half way through some one spotted the whales again and seeing a spout I tried to focus as to where they may reappear. Wow! I certainly did not expect the double breach but i had the camera ready on sports mode and they surfaced exactly where i had focused on the water.. Right place ,right time , right anticipation. i just kept the shutter depressed until they disappeared.Lighting
That time of the morning 7.30 am in the tropics, the light was perfect. Not a cloud in the sky. and the sun just off to the East still low on the horizon.Equipment
My camera is a Nixon D5200. I had a 55 - 300mm lens. the ISO 400 F 7.1 at 65mm 1/2000 sec ( sports mode ) No tripod just manually balancing in my hand.Inspiration
There really was no inspiration for this one shot . The whole trip was an inspiration to see and photograph the uniqueness of the Kimberly coast, Its wildlife , geology, colour and wilderness, So unspoilt. The photo has become my inspiration to keep on with photography. the more shots i take, the more i learn and the better i become..Editing
Yes, i have cropped in as far as possible to try and keep the integratory of the shot.. to have gone in any closer would have made it look too grainy,, My main regret was that my camera was set to JPEG - normal instead of fine as the day before i was taking snap shots. So i was limited to what i could do.Now i never have it off the FINE setting ,no matter what.In my camera bag
I usually carry 2 lenses . 18-55mm and 55 - 300mm. I also have a uv lens filter on the 18-55 Each has a lens shade. I carry a back up battery, memory cards and usb sticks to down load and back up. I also keep my manual close as i am still a beginner.Feedback
The best advice given to me was to always have your camera at the ready. This was why I was the only person on board to have captured the double breach. I kept going and also captured the baby doing a single after Mum and Dad. It was the best experience of the whole trip and I have the photos to prove it. Keep shooting, you never know what you end up with.
