Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo near our Maui condo where we spend two months in the winter. The location is in Kapalua.

Time

This photo was taken in the afternoon. There was a strong offshore breeze and I thought it was interesting how the clouds and water were traveling in the same direction. Offshore breezes in this area are not very common

Lighting

The sun was low and also covered by clouds

Equipment

I used my 5D Mark 3 Canon Camera with a EF 16-35mm f/2.8L 2 USM wide angle lens. The camera was mounted on a Manfroto Tripod

Inspiration

I was sitting on the lanai at my condo visiting with my parents who were visiting. Most of the day had been sunny with few clouds. The offshore breeze was unusual and I was intrigued with the way the wind was pushing the water out from shore. When the clouds showed up they were moving right along and in the same direction with the water. I wanted to capture the movement with a long exposure. The photo was taken with 46 second exposure at f/16, ISO 100. It was still quite bright out so I used a Big Lee Filter system to get the long exposure that I wanted.

Editing

I used Lightroom on this photo. I shoot only in RAW. Just used the basic corrections with white balance, lens profile, color and clarity bump, contrast, vignette and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I have the 7D mark 2, 5D Mark 3 for cameras. I have a dozen various Canon L Series lenses but my most used are the Canon 16-35 f/2, 24-105 f/4, 100 f/2.8 Macro and the 70-200 f/2.8. For accessories I have the Manfrotto Tripod, Big Lee Filters and a polarizer filter for each lens

Feedback

Check out using the Marumi Waterfall Filters or Big Lee Filter system for long exposures in bright light. They work great for capturing cloud or water movement. Usually when I shoot here the wind is blowing toward shore and the waves are crashing into the lave a rock. Be prepared to have lens cleaner and cloths because the wind will carry salt water mist onto the camera and lens. Sometimes I need to clean the glass after every shot. Also a good idea to have a storm jacket to protect the camera as much as possible.
