Behind The Lens

Location

Horgenberg is a small beautiful place just 15 minutes from Zurich with green areas and forests. A nice palce to live with animals.

Time

One of the first thing you learn in photography is the right light is important. Which is in the morning or early evening for outdoor animal photography. Of course it's right. As photographer you can not always choose. In this case, we could just shoot about noon in the bright sunshine in the snow what is the worst case.

Lighting

The fact that the midday sun burned and I should photograph a white horse in snow scared me just a bit but I like the challenge. I always try to be open and accept situations as they are. You can not lose you can only gain new experience.

Equipment

Nikon D4s, AF-S NIKKOR 80–400 mm 1:4,5–5,6 G ED VR

Inspiration

The desire to photographe free running horses existed for a long time. Horses are beautiful animals with an impressive physique and so much power. In our region it's not so easy to shoot free running horses. They often do not have large areas. One day I asked Cornelia with her adorable American Paint Horse, wich I met some times during the walk with my dogs, if she agrees to make a shooting with her beauty. Very happy to had this opportunity. That her dog ran into the picture in the right moment was just luck. The horse and the dogs of Cornelia are very familiar. The dogs were unstoppable and had a lot of fun to run with Chelsy the mare.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW and developing the images in Lightroom, contrast, temperatur, tint, exposure... In Photoshop I edit the picture to get more details, remove annoying things, vignetting... Post-processing is a great tool but from a bad photo you can't make a good one.

In my camera bag

I use a camera bag trolley so I have everything with me: Nikon D4, Nikon D4s, Nikkor 80-400mm, Nikkor 24-70mm, Sigma 150mm macro and a Nikon SB-900 speedlight, second battery.

Feedback

Horses are not easy to shoot because they don't always do what you want, sometimes not at all. Don't enforcing it have patience. If it doesn't work try another day. Looking for a rider who knows his/her horse very well. A third person is helpful wich brings the horse in motion in the right direction. For animals in motion most suitable is a zoom lens. First go into contact with the animal that it knows who you are. The lens may look like a big eye for the animals, let them time to become familiar with it. Sit or lie down on the ground to get a better perspective. Make sure that you have the sun in the back(except for backlight shots), when light enters the eye it seems much more alive. Good luck and have fun :-)
