Behind The Lens

Location

Canyonlands National Park- Utah- USA

Time

Around 10 o'clock am.

Lighting

Was a great combination of light due the strong brightness coming from outside the canyon and the shade inside of it. It took me several minutes to find the right position to avoid sun's frontal light, but at the end the result was really good.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D600 and a manual Nikon 15mm f 3,5 AI-S. I like to use old lenses on modern camera's bodies. I used a Manfrotto tripod (055 CX Pro4) and the Manfrotto's head 460 MG.

Inspiration

The atmosphere was really good that morning and the light was something special. Looking at this natural step from the ground gave me the idea of a door to another world, that's why i tried different position to take this photo, because the frontal sunlight was not helping, but I wanted a great shot!

Editing

I just correct the photo with levels curves in PS. I did not boost any contrast and/or color. The light was perfect itself. Using manual lenses on modern camera body, give me more control on the field and I don't need to spend a lot of time in post production.

In my camera bag

Normally I have two camera bodies the Nikon 24-70mm f2,8 and the Nikon 70-200mm f2,8 VRII, a tripod and filters (polarizer and UV). Extra lenses or gear will depend by the location and subjects.

Feedback

First of all the location and the subject is very important. What I normally suggest to other photographers, that ask me advices is to try different positions to get unusual perspective, especially in nature photography. On internet is easy to find great photos, but most are not interesting to me, due the fact the compositions are all similar. Experimenting with light and perspective, can bring to superb final results.
