Location
This photo is a composite of 3 photos. The model and background were shot in parks across London. The door is a stock imageTime
The Background for this photo was shot in late winter in one of my local parks, hence some of the bleakness of the branches and the dead leaves on the floor. I think it was late in the afternoon which was gave this walkway a small pocket of light and attracted my attention. The Model was shot during the hight of summer and her dress was knee length, it was luck that the light wasn't too bright being in the UK so that i could blend her in properly.Lighting
When i shot the background image, i didn't have the this image in mind or thought out. I was drawn to the pocket of light that was in this dark covered pathway and thought that it looked interesting. It was when i i got home and started to play with a selection images that i thought about what i wanted to do with it. What drove me more so was how i was feeling at the time and i wanted to make a photo that represented that.Equipment
Both images were shot on a Canon 7d, Lenses used 85mm F1.8 and 24-70mm F2.8Inspiration
I wanted to bring how i felt to life, i wanted to see how what i felt about where i was at would translate in a photo. I was inspired by other photographers and the ability to create something out of several images. I was also wanting to explore a new side of my photography. Coming from a background of Street and portraiture, conceptual and compositing photography were new avenues for me and something i wanted to explore more of.Editing
Yes, quite a bit, but In a nutshell I started off with a basic edit in photoshop raw as i do with all photos, this will be exposure, highlights and shadows, to get the basic feel. After then its a series of layer masks and blend modes, hues and the whole left side is cloned with leaves and vines as the original was just a fence with gaps and looked distracting. The light from the door was made using curves and various adjustments and blend modes. In my camera bag
I always carry my DSLR which now is a Canon 6d, attached will be my 24-70 f2.8 MK2 - i usually shove this in my everyday backpack. I find this a great all rounder lens and does the job for most things. When I carry my Camera backpack I have an 85mm and 50mm and i love shooting portraits on the 85mm. I also carry a Canon 580exii and some triggers. I enjoy playing with Off Camera Flash and you can get really creative. I have other equipment but thats my basic.Feedback
Carry a notebook for sketching out ideas, this will help you shoot more specifically especially for backgrounds. Think about the light, not just for the background but on the model, sometimes blend modes, curves and adjustments aren't enough to make it look like they were all there at the time. Most importantly think about the story behind your image and practice editing. I watch lots of tutorials and use various social network forums for tips, tricks and help.
