The image was taken at Muriwai Beach Gannet Colony on Aucklands West Coast - New Zealand February 2015Time
The image was just before a much anticipated sunset that never happened - it was around 7.45pm.Lighting
This particular evening, my photography buddies & I were hoping for an epic sunset that Muriwai Beach is famous for during the summer months...However, mother nature had other plans! It ended up being very dull with little dramatic light as the evening light drew closer...so we made the best & decided to focus on Gannet Rock.Equipment
This image was shot on my Nikon D3200, 18-55mm Nikkor Lens @ 18mm. Aperture F8 with a 1 minute exposure using the Hoya 9stop filter. Camera mounted on my Slik Pro Tripod. YES..this image was taken on the kit lens that came with the camera at time of purchase!Inspiration
Inspiration for the image came from a "Night of Firsts". I was on my first ever Seascape Workshop with the Tutor & 1 other Photographer. It was my first venture in to long exposure/seascape/sunset shooting....Our wish was to get an epic sunset but nature had other plans. Id never shot with a long exposure filter before as I was relatively new to photography & I can remember the feeling of excitement when I reviewed the image after the exposure had finished! The result transpired in to a passion of Landscape/Long Exposure photography & a style that Im getting better at each time I shoot.Editing
I was also new to post processing & didn't really understand the Lightroom Workflow to bring out the best in the image, so I converted the original RAW image in Lightroom HDR.In my camera bag
NOW...My Lowepro back pack gear never changes- my trusty Nikon D3200 with a super 17-50mm 2.8 Nikor Lens & 50mm 1.8 Ltd Edition Nikor Prime accompany me on every outing (mainly because they are the only 2 lens I own)...I was given some advice a year ago by an old Pro photographer that stuck in my head..his words were " A camera is only as good as the glass that you mount on it - buy yourself a great piece of glass" .. I always have the Giga T Pro 11 wireless timer remote with spare batteries packed as it is necessary for the long exposures if the occasion calls for it. My Lee Filters never get left behind either - the Big Stopper, both 0.9 Hard & Soft Grads have had plenty of use since upgrading from screw in filters. The Slik Tripod also attends as I never know when it may be needed.Feedback
As a beginner back in February ..I never anticipated how much I would enjoy the kind of photography that resulted in this image. I literally can't wait for the end of my working week just so that I can get out & shoot. Ive attended workshops & taken advice from some great photographers. My advice would be to watch, listen & learn from others - get out & practice as much as possible & be prepared to have lots of patience.
