Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph on the edge of a small pond behind my house near Savannah, Ga.

Time

Late in the afternoon.

Lighting

The evening sun was behind me.

Equipment

Canon 7D with a 100mm Canon lens mounted on a tripod using a cable. ISO 100 No flash. f7.1 - 1/30. I shot in live view.

Inspiration

Most mornings and evenings I walk to the pond with my camera to fine some of the creatures that live there. This was the first time I saw what to me appeared to be a family just sitting on this stalk of grass. They did not hop away. I took a lot of different exposures from many different angles as they posed for me. I selected this photograph as a representative of the big batch I took.

Editing

I used lightroom 5 for pp. I cropped it some in order to clean up the edges and crop out a few strands of other weeds. I used a few of the sliders to get the color I remembered and wanted.

In my camera bag

7D camera. 100mm lens, cable release, small reflector, extra compact flash cards, batteries and a tripod. Sometimes I take the Tamron 17-270 mounted on my backup 7D.

Feedback

I have to use a tripod and cable release. I walk slowly looking for the creatures that are trying to hide. Always be ready for most anything with many of the camera setting ready to go for at least one or two photographs then fine tune the process as events dictate. Take as many exposures as you can at different settings if the subject poses.
