Location
This was shot around the backstreets of South London. It was part of a 10 page fashion story for an fashion magazine which has (like so many others) sadly folded. (forgive the pun...)Time
About 10 am at the end of August. It was overcast so the light was fairly flat.Lighting
This was shot in daylight with a couple of big reflectors to bounce and give good key lights in the eyes.Equipment
Canon F1n, 50mm f1.2. Daylight. Stock was Ilford XP2 rated 400 and processed through C41. Printed on Agfa Record Rapid.Inspiration
We wanted to do something radical so we based a fashion story around a funeral - something I don't think had ever been done before - or since! It was a way of including mens and women formal wear in the same shoot.Editing
This was shot in the good old days of film and paper so there's no post processing except a few experiments with the print. In my camera bag
I never have any equipment. I just borrow / hire what I need for each shoot - this means I'm not tied to any one system or approach. Some jobs you want a huge old 5x4 field camera on a tripod, sometimes you need a Leica. Although, I do always have an old Canon Ixus in my pocket for "happy snaps" and to record locations I might want to go back to.Feedback
For this kind of portrait you just need really fast lenses, always focus on the eyes, get close.
