Location
I took the photo standing underneath the mass rapid transit lines in Singapore's Jurong East. It's otherwise a grassy patch triangulated by shopping malls (Jem, JCube, and Westgate) in the midst of Jurong East's copious housing developments.Time
This is between 6.30 and 7.00 pm with the sun going down.Lighting
I was here to capture a few shots of the JCube mall during blue hour (from about 7.15)--it's an odd building and lit in striking ways (the picture is also in my gallery). While waiting I captured some surrounding city landscapes. The lines of the concrete overground begin to appear almost elegant in the soft evening light. There is no artificial lighting on these viaduct structures so I used a bit of HDR: three shots to maximize both the light and darker features of the scene.Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark II with the EF 24-105 f/4L. I had the Sirui tripod but not yet set up--so this is three shots handheld.Inspiration
I am fascinated by the environments of city dwellers and I am interested in catching the striking and sometimes bold outlines of city life--the changing effects of the light--and in Singapore this comes into its own early in the morning and as the sun goes down.Editing
These three shots (minus two/zero/plus two) were processed in Photomatix 5. Medium lighting and smoothing. Then tweaked in Lightroom with curves and some subtle split toning. In my camera bag
I always take a Fujifilm X100S and often that's it. A more serious shoot will require the Canon 5d mark II with two lenses: the EF 24-105m L and the EF 16-35 1:2.8 L and a range of lens filters. I normally take either the Sirui tripod or the Manfrotto 732cy (designed for travel) and the canon remote. If I need additional lighting: two canon Speedlights with some softboxes and reflectors.Feedback
I always have a camera with me. Sometimes the least promising scene can turn into a surprising and striking photograph.
