This is a old warehouse on Chicago's famous Goose Island. It was a island full industry. Today it is a little more diverse, however it still is mostly warehouses. This building is a massive abandon complex.

I was drawn to this scene by the beauty that is still there. There are still hints of its industrial grandeur. This would have been a place for box cars to be loaded and unloaded. Today it is littered in shatter glass and the walls covered in graffiti. I held my camera just off of the ground to create a slightly different perspective.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Chicago, IL. on Goose Island, on the near north side. Goose island is a mostly industrial island in the middle of the north branch, of the Chicago River.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon.

Lighting

My lighting was actually all natural. It was an overcast day which helped me take this photo at the time of day I did.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D300 with my Nikor 18-105 lens. The ground I used as my tripod.

Inspiration

I had just bought a new memory card at the photo store that use to be on Goose Island. I had some time to kill before my scheduled photo shoot for the afternoon. I drove around trying to find a cool old building to take a few quick shots of. Once I saw this building and scene I hit the breaks and garbed my camera. There was broken glass every where. From the building and what seemed like hundreds of broken bottles. Carefully walking over the glass I came to this scene, however there was a huge barbed wire fence in the way. The fence had about a one foot gap at the bottom. So I took my camera, took it under the fence and started to shoot. After making some adjustments to the settings, and trying to line the shot up I got this. The blur at the bottom is all broken glass. The whole time I was just think how beautiful this building must have been back in it's industrial days. I wanted to document this while the building is still up and show no matter how old, you can't hide it's past.

Editing

Yes, I did straighten it a little and I upped the contrast just a tad.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D300 body and usually two lenses, normally my Nikor 18-105 and Nikor 55-300. I also have various filters, extra battery, cleaning cloth for my lens, and a note pad. I bring my tripod for night time photography.

Feedback

When ever I photograph a shot like this I try to have an image already in my head on how I want it to look. With this the camera was held at an angle on the ground. When you do that there is a lot of trial and error. You will have lots of photos that don't turn out, maybe aiming at the wrong thing, not in focus, or the settings are way off. This was the result after almost 30 different shots, with the others having one or more of the problems I mentioned. Don't think you have to jump a fence to get a good shot like this, I had a 10 foot fence in my face taking this. Just work with your surroundings, everything will fall in to place.
