Location
This photo was taken on my property north of Sydney, Australia. We have a stand of turpentine trees where this pair of Tawny Frogmouths nest.Time
The photo was taken late afternoon not long before it started to rain in late Spring.Lighting
Lighting was all natural light. Overcast about to rain.Equipment
I used my faithful Canon 5d MkII. The camera was paired with my Canon 100-400 f 4.5 - 5.6L IS. I also used 320 ISO due to the cloud. No flash (didn't want to scare them). Aperture was 10. Focal length 400mm.Inspiration
Each year two Tawny Frogmouth's nest in a particular tree, successfully rearing 2 to 3 chicks. This particular year one of the chicks had prematurely left the nest. So, being nice humans, we helped watch over the chick during the day making sure it was off the ground. Amazingly the parents watched over this chick day and night and would swoop on anything (other than us - they seemed to know we were helping) that went near the chick. This particular day the chick was on our back deck chair and mum or dad(don't know which) came down to feed it. Obviously we got the evil stare when we got a little too close.Editing
Even though I used my 100-400 Canon Lens, I cropped the image to focus on those amazing eyes. A little colour correction and contrast. In my camera bag
Naturally it depends on the type of photography I am planning that day. But normally I will pack my Canon 5d MkII and Canon 70d cameras, spare batteries for both - the worst day is when your battery goes flat before you have finished. Lenses according to plans. Maybe Canon 24-105mm, this is by far my favourite lens - it is so versatile. Maybe my Canon 300mm or a wide angle lens. I usually pack a couple of different filters - possible an ND for water blur or a ND Graduant for sunset(especially over water).Feedback
As birds tend to be very flighty around humans, I suggest staying back and using a 300 or 400mm lens. Don't take too many photos - they will fly away. So I say, short and sweet.
