Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the south fork of the Flathead River in Glacier National Park.

Time

I was traveling along the south side of Glacier National Park in the early morning heading towards East Glacier when I noticed the pristine scenery unfolding before me. Although the sky offered little the Fall colors along with the stillness of the river were enough to create this serendipitous moment.

Lighting

The late morning light was enough to highlight the beautiful colors of Fall and illuminated the river to show the spectrum of blue green in the water.

Equipment

The photo was created with a Nikon D800, 24-70mm f2.8 lens with a circular polarizing filter set on a Really Right Stuff tripod and ball head.

Inspiration

I was spending the week in Glacier with three other photographers, we were there to shoot the Fall colors of the Park. After a few days we had already captured all the iconic shots that are usually attributed to Glacier, Lake McDonald, Logan Pass and so on. Although all are breath taking and beautiful in there own right I wanted something more, something less iconic but still showed the pristine beauty of the Park in a part that is usually overlooked.

Editing

I create all of my photos in RAW format. When it comes to composition and white balance I do my best to get it right in camera. I use Lightroom when it comes time to optimize the color and contrast of the scene.

In my camera bag

When I leave for a landscape shoot I never go without my 14-24mm f2.8 and my 24-70mm f2.8 lenses. The next thing to go in the bag is my D800, this 36 mega pixel full frame format is unbelievable. I have complete confidence that when I push the shutter that I have captured every detail possible. Next but definitely not least is my Really Right Stuff tripod, that is one piece of equipment I never leave home without.

Feedback

Glacier National Park is one jewel of many in the crown of American National Parks, it is very easy to walk away with a stunning photo but keep in mind so do thousands of others. My advice to set yourself apart is when you set up to take your shot be mindful, am I creating and capturing the emotion that prompted me to create the photo in the first place.
