Location
This photo was taken in Hana, Hawaii at the Seven Sacred pools. This image was created during a workshop I did with the amazing Brooke Shaden.Time
This was shot mid-day, which is kind of how it came about. The light in the area was so bright and unflattering that the only place I could find to shoot the model was under the waterfall in the shade. The light under there was so pretty and soft as it was filtered through the water, and the water was in the sun so it really pops.Lighting
This is all natural light, nothing added, which is my favorite light to shoot in.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikkon D7000 and Nikkor 10-24mm lens.Inspiration
When I saw that there was a dry place under this waterfall it was like a childhood dream come true! Hawaii is so magical. I knew where I wanted her, but to shoot this image I was standing on a wet slippery cliff, it was really kind of terrifying. I was at the edge and I was looking through the lens trying to get the shot instead of trying not to fall over the side. This was a really quick shoot, once I got her under there, and I got the shutter fast enough to stop the water, it was over in just a few minutes. Thankfully I had a great model, because with the roar of the waterfall she could hardly hear any of my directions.Editing
I shoot raw, so I always have to do some post. The biggest thing was that this model is a REALLY fit surfer, and I wanted to have her look very soft and angelic, so I actually had to soften the muscles and veins on her arms. I did do a bit of sharpening and adjusting with the clarity slider to get the mist out of the image and make it look really sharp. In my camera bag
Well, not to much actually, I have a Nikkon D7000 and a variety of nikkor lenses that range from 10mm to 300mm. I always have a tripod and a cheap remote, but I would like to get a fancy one so I can shoot images from longer distances.Feedback
Well, first is having a great model. The thing about Christy, is that she is not only beautiful, but she is athletic, so she felt comfortable climbing up to this spot and getting under there. She looks soft and relaxed, but it wasn't easy for her to hold that pose. Second, is all about being creative and seeing what is available when you actually get to a location, especially when you don't have any control over where or what time you are going out to shoot (like when you are in a workshop). Never be afraid to play! Try things, see what works. Many of my best images were spur of the moment decisions, rather than planned out, over thought work. I find that even with planned out shoots, if you don't have a spark of spontaneity, your images will be lifeless. The beauty of photography, versus any other art, is that you can capture the unexpected.
