Location
Captured at the residence of an elder gentleman who resided in the neighborhood.Time
It was a beautiful morning @ 11:55 AM.Lighting
Soft lighting came naturally from a northern window. It felt right, it was right.Equipment
Camera in use at the time was Nikon D70, lens Nikkor 24-70mm. Hand held, no flash. Settings were f4.5, 1/30 sec, 62 mm.Inspiration
I made the acquaintance of this elderly gentleman and his dog while on routine morning walks. We had conversation, both he and I loved our pets and animals in general. It was at this time I was introduced to his dog "Pookie". We exchanged phone numbers & email addresses, etc. Days seemed to have pasted when my memory couldn't account for seeing Bob and Pookie's walk routine. The thought eluded me and on this one morning I got a phone call from Bob who informed me of the sad news of the passing of his old friend Pookie. A somber moment it was as Bob often spoke of Pookie being his truly closest and most loyal friend. It was a few days later that a phone call came my way and it was Bob. He said, "Jerry, if you have a moment I'd like to show you my new friend." My anticipations grew with greeting, as I expected, a new puppy dog! The occasion seemed exciting enough warranting the photographing of the event! One could imagine the absolute surprise upon realizing Bobs new friend was that of a Rat! And what I was immediately witnessing was an obvious quick bonding between Bob and "Spotty"! My camera shutter dropped on this image and it became a picture of friendship that was sure to be lasting! And I'll never forget Bob's words as I departed from this session; He said, in a low and somber voice, "Jerry, the longer I live (92 at the time) the fewer the friend"s. Bob has since, I'm sure, gone to the heavens, as he so rightly deserve going!. God rest his soul. PS. The whereabouts of his friend Spotting never became other then speculation!Editing
Only post processing was some overall softening. In my camera bag
Currently my primary camera is the full frame Nikon D750 with a back-up Nikon D300s. Included are a variety of lens ranging from fisheye through the more commonly used Nikkor 24- 70 mm 2.8, 60 mm macro, alone with a Sigma 500. Included is an external Nikon SB 800 flash, and a steady Alta Pro tripod.Feedback
On an occasion as this, at the very best, if you feel the true emotional interaction going on between human & animal, the rest, I believe, will seem to come natural; The shallow depth of field eliminated all that would cause one not to focus on what the photographer wishes you to, the exposure selected will provide a mood, and the release of the shutter must fall on the exact peak emotional moment! Multiple, rapid shutter drops will likely capture that moment.
