Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my living room. I was the model. And, it was in the middle of the night. The "light" switched on while i was busy working on something else and i had to make this shot right there and then.

Time

This is one of those images where I had most fun with creating. For a time I knew the main element that I wanted to shoot about this image but something was lacking to complete the composition so I just parked it in the back of my mind. One night while working on some of my photos I remembered that a friend has left behind a few bottles of beer and that’s when it clicked on me. I left what I was doing and worked on my lighting setup. Took 6 shots and that part of the project was done. My first shot was at 12:55 A.M. and the last one was at 1:18 A.M. The whole shoot took about an hour. It was 11 July 2013 and I had work in the morning!

Lighting

I’m a self-taught photographer and so most things in my photography is experimentation therefore I’m not sure if this is worth sharing. However, whenever I look at an image the first thing that I always try to figure out is the lighting, so I guess there will be those people like me who would be interested. This is simple setup of a single softbox placed approximately half a meter in front of the model (that’s me!) and tilted downward at a 45-degree angle. I also handheld a white cardboard just below the frame to reflect some light for definition.

Equipment

I shot this composite image on a Sony A850, with a 50mm f/1.7 Minolta lens set at f/19. I also used my trusty aluminium Manfrotto 144 tripod with 141RC head. I have set each shot on a 10-second delay timer (have misplaced my remote release). For my light I used a Hensel Integra 500 monoblock and a small Chimera Super softbox.

Inspiration

This photo was originally a project for an interclub competition. The theme was “Reaching”. My original idea was to have a hand coming out of a mouth reaching out for something. I had a vague memory of seeing a poster of a movie with a hand coming out of a mouth and kind of covering the person’s face. I looked it up on the internet found that it was a poster of the horror movie The Possession. I haven’t seen the movie though.

Editing

I would have loved to do this in one shot but that would have required a lot of unspeakable things to do. No, kidding aside, yes I did a fair bit of post-processing work on this image. This is a composite of three photos: the hand holding a bottle of beer, the hand reaching out, and the head shot. I started work in Lightroom mainly to give the three shots a balanced and uniform look. I have exported these as TIFF files and then used Photoshop to do the final work. I first worked on merging the head shot and the hand reaching out. The challenge was to make it look like coming out of the mouth in a more “realistic” fashion. At this stage I was still working on the color version of the image as I wanted to work with as much detail information as I can. I then composited the hand holding the beer into the work. I converted it to Black and White using Topaz plug-in. Final adjustments was made using Tony Kuyper’s Luminosity Masks.

In my camera bag

It depends on what I wanted to shoot when I go out. But, lately, I’m into landscape photography so it will be my Konica-Minolta 17-35mm f/2.8 which i mostly used at the its widest (and my Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX just in case I need it). My Hitech PRO IRND Filter kit and a non-brand electronic timer/intervalometer. As I only have one camera so my Sony A850 goes in the bag as well, of course. If I’m shooting portraits then I take my Minolta 85mm f/1.4 G for its sharpness and high resolving power and my Minolta 70-210mm f/4, the legendary “Beercan”. I also put in the bag my 27-70mm Sigma as I like the lens flare it creates for moody fashion shot. I also take the Minolta 50mm f/1.7 just in case.

Feedback

Create the image in your mind. Visualize it. Once this is done you will know what you need in terms of equipment and things you need to do to make the image. Be inspired. Get your inspiration from anything that stimulate you. From this single image I am further inspired to make a series of photographs based on violence: the awareness and prevention of it. One day i will finish it. So don't let go of your inspiration. Get out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to experiment. But most of all, have fun!
