Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was unintentional. I found this little mantis on the siding of my house. I thought it would like it more being in a better environment. I picked it up and placed it in our window box. It kept staring at me for quite a while, and thought I would take a few images of it. It was very obliging and let me place it in different plants in the box until I found a few good angles that would be commentary to it's beauty..

Time

It was close to midday, warm with just a slight breeze. It was a very pleasant early October day.

Lighting

Being midday, the sun shining brightly, backlit the subject very well.

Equipment

I used my Sony a65 with my Tamron SP DI 90mm f2.8 Macro lens. The lens has been a welcome tool in my quest for a perfect image. I did use my tripod for this image.

Inspiration

It was really a no brainer, as I am always looking for subjects to capture in macro.

Editing

I did take the RAW image to Light room to crop and to bump up the contrast and clarity.

In my camera bag

I usually take along my Minolta Maxxum 70-200 and 100-300 lenses and my Minolta 50mm prime len. I also use a Quantary 28-90mm f2.3 macro lens that has proven to be a very well made lens, that was a steal at $9.

Feedback

I think it is best to learn to use manual settings on your camera. I feel it is beneficial to take the time to fully understand manual settings for focus, white balance and aperture settings. Your aperture setting is going to give you the depth of field needed for macros AND quite frankly for any other image you are trying to compose. Manual focus to me is a must, On my Sony, I use "spot" focusing, and I will press the zoom function button that zooms in on the spot focus window on my live view screen. Once the is done, I can manually focus on the zoomed image, then press the shutter button. While using a tripod with the use of the camera's timer or use of a remote trigger device will certainly take the shake out of your camera when capturing that picture perfect image. I think it is well worth the work involved in understanding all functions of one's equipment.
