Behind The Lens

Location

I was born in Mexico City, but seven years ago I moved to the small town of Chihuahua. For several months I have spent my free time doing a photographic project about the people of Chihuahua. This photograph was taken in one of my many visits to Chihuahua Downtown.

Time

I took this photo around 8 months ago (May 18th), it was around 5 or 6 pm. In fact it was the first time using my new camera (Nikon Df). I was just having fun.

Lighting

The photo was taken with natural light in the shade of a building.

Equipment

Nikon Df and Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art

Inspiration

I love to see scenes where humans interact with animals. What inspired me to take the picture was seeing the man hugging his dog, both looked very tired. After talking with him for a moment I decided to take a picture with his dog.

Editing

Yes, for several months I have collaborated with Visual Supply Co (VSCO) in its Artist Initiative. They created amazing presets for Lightroom that emulate film. In this case I used one that emulates a Kodak Tri-X 400 film.

In my camera bag

I have two bodies, Nikon d600 and Nikon Df, my favorite lenses are the Sigma 35mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4. Sometimes I carry another lenses like a cheap Nikon 50mm 1.8 D and for video manual lenses like the Nikkor 24mm 2.8 ais, Nikkor 55mm (Micro) 2.8 ais and Nikkor 85mm 1.4 ais. Also I have a basic strobist gear, two yongnuo speedlights and some radios to trigger the flashes.

Feedback

The secret about getting great portraits on the street is talk to the person, know more about him and specially build trust, that will help you to get close and make awesome pictures.
