Behind The Lens

Location

Lincoln Zoo, Chicago IL

Time

Afternoon. It doesn't really matter since the bird area is indoor.

Lighting

Next time I'd bring a tripod. Low light conditions and a thick glass so a polarized filter would be a good idea as well.

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon 5D Mk III + Canon 200mm. No flash.

Inspiration

I don't usually photograph wildlife or animals of any kind. This was just a regular visit to the zoo and I was able to take a few good images. This one is my favorite by far.

Editing

It was processed entirely on Lightroom. I made the usual corrections enhancing the saturation. No cropping.

In my camera bag

When I'm on assignment I carry my Canon 5D Mk II + Canon 6D and a bunch of Canon L lenses like the old 35mm and the 70-200 f2.8. I've been taking my Canon 24-105mm lately to shoot video. When I'm traveling or just walking around the city I use my Fujifilm X-T10.

Feedback

As I said, I'd bring a tripod and a polarized filter. A tele lens would be if you want to have some success shooting at the zoo. Many times the 200mm wasn't enough to cover the distance between the animals and me.
