Location
This photo was taken in Boulder, CO.Time
It was taken between 2-3pm. The sun was out but there were storm clouds brewing so we were hustling to beat the rain. You can kind of see them creeping in at the top right.Lighting
All natural lighting. We moved the car to the other side of the parking lot from where we were to get the backlighting on Briana.Equipment
I just used my Sony A58 camera and the lens it came with.Inspiration
Briana is a singer/songwriter and also works in the film industry. She had this idea to do a shoot to get some album cover artwork. I told her I thought Joan Jett would be a good look to go for because, to me, Joan has always been a strong female lead. Briana wanted to use this shoot as a tool to empower women in film and in music. The camera in her hand is one she actually has shot film with and is an antique she's had for many years. The look for this photo is about her, as a director in film, scoping out the next scene - all while looking like a badass. My dad was kind enough to let me borrow his car for a couple hours for the shoot and the images we got from that day are some of my favorite. It was very casual and came together because we were able to collaborate as we went.Editing
For post processing, I used Lightroom and did the "yesteryear" filter to age it (wanted that Joan Jett era feel). I also sharpened it up some, lightened up shadows, and enhanced the colors slightly. I didn't do much to it - the lighting was pretty nice from the start. In my camera bag
I always have my camera, and the lens it came with, and a Tamron lens for telephoto opportunities. But in my car, I always have a box of props - everything from beads to a tiara to fake flowers in case the mood strikes.Feedback
My best advice - change your perspective by crouching, lying on the ground, climbing up, turning your head sideways, etc. This shot happened because I sat on the ground to scope it out, then ended up laying on my side to take it. I liked the angle looking up at her, making it seem like she was a power to reckon with. We took about 400 shots within an hour and half, so keep clicking and moving around. Let it evolve as you go and have fun with it!
