Behind The Lens

Location

Eastern Sierra's of California on HWY 395 around 2-3 miles north of the Mono Lake Vista Point.

Time

@1pm Oct 2012

Lighting

The lighting was very harsh

Equipment

Nikon D800, 28.0-300mm F3.5-5.6 lens, handheld

Inspiration

I was with a group of photographers and we all pulled over to take in the view. I was the only one interested in getting this shot as the rest said the lighting was too harsh. This just inspired me to take the picture even more and the combination of snow and color was what inspired me the most.

Editing

Due to the harsh lighting the trees were a bit washed out. I used lightroom and increased the Contrast, Clarity, Vibrance and increased the saturation to get it as close to what it really looked like.

In my camera bag

My main camera is a Nikon D850 and I have a Nikon D800 as a backup camera. On long trips I also bring 2 film cameras (Nikon F5 and Mamiya RB67Pro SD Medium format). Several tripods in various weights, remote control units, gps unit, Nikon SB900 flash, small tripod for laptop in case I use Nikon control. I also bring 300-500mm lens, lots of extra camera batteries.

Feedback

Take as many pictures as you can all the time, you will then get to know your camera and your photographs will speak for themselves. Many I have met spend more time trying to learn how to take pictures from others rather than go out and get to know their camera and take photos. The majority of the classic photographer greats never had a class in photography, they went out and started taking pictures all the time. I view photography as my opportunity to show you what I see from my perspective, so I may take pictures of corners, or things most people do not look at, there is always something to take a picture of.
