Location
This is the Grand Prismatic Spring at the Midway geyser basin in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.Time
This image was taken in mid-morning.Lighting
The day was fairly overcast so there wasn't a lot of direct sunlight to deal with.Equipment
I shot this image with a Nikon D 800 with the 24mm-120mm lens at 58mm. Exposure was 1/200 f/20 ISO 320Inspiration
I had seen aerial views of this large spring and so wanted to get some higher perspective to shoot. From the ground you just can't get to see the spring and it's full beauty. It was also a way to get away from the other visitors. I had to hike up the steep adjacent hill to get an unobstructed view of the spring. There were a lot of pines and burnt tree trunks along the hillside. The hike was worth it!Editing
I always use Camera Raw and Photoshop to process. I do use some of the Nik plug-ins, and for this image, the Color Efex Pro.In my camera bag
It totally depends on what I'm going out to shoot. I like to travel as light as possible. If I'm shooting wildlife, I'll have my Nikon and either my 80-400mm lens or the 200-400mm. If I'm going out for landscapes I'll have my 24-120 as an all purpose lens. If the trip is mainly landscape, I now will bring my Sony A7 mirrorless and the 24-240mm and the 10-18mm lens. I also have the Nikon 105mm for macro and a 70-300mm for zooming in on details, but these two lenses don't make the camera bag too often.Feedback
Yellowstone can get very crowded. It's best to go out early or later in the day for better light and less crowds. Thunderstorms can come up quickly so be prepared if you set out to hike.
