Love the Rule of Thirds composition. Wonderful detail and sharper than tacks, face and eyes. Beautiful color. That camera must've cost over $30 U.S., :-).

You talk about the king of beast; just look at that pose. You must have had a really long lens focal length to get a shot like this. Look at that face; the deadly look in his eyes. Great shot man, great shot! Congrats on the feature.

Location
This beautiful Lion was photographed at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, the park is located just outside Doncaster, South Yorkshire, in England Lion Country was opened in May 2010, and houses a pride of thirteen African lions, all of which came from Oradea Zoological Garden in Romania. And this Male is in prime condition!Time
I decided to go and do a late visit to the park in the Month of November, this is a quite time for the park and most visitors are done at this time of the year I arrived at the park around 15:30 in the late afternoon for the purpose of photographing big cats, with no children running around and limited people about, this was a golden opportunityLighting
The weather was overcast with plenty of cloud in the sky simply perfect for this shot, this gave me a massive soft-box to defuse the remaining light for the day The sun had started to drop nicely due to the time of day, this works well for the lions due to them being night feeders, this is when they start to come to life, sleep time is over which is what I was waiting forEquipment
I was using a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens Due to not having a tripod with me at the time, this was shot hand held leaning the camera on top of a flat post with a small beanbag under for grip, this works well if you bed the camera into the beanbag Captured at 1/1000 f/5.6 ISO 500 shot at 400 mmInspiration
I love wildlife photography and my favorite is the big cat's This male lion caught my attention with its facial expressions, wide awake and deadly inquisitive to what I was doing just stand there and making very little movement, the lion was watching me watching him I very slowly set up my camera on the post, the 100-400 was already attachedEditing
I tend to use Photoshop CS5 for my post processing work, The only work I did here was a small adjustment to the highlights and shadows sliders, lower the saturation a touchIn my camera bag

Yes be very quite, take your time and most of all be very patient, set up your equipment and wait, if you don't get the shot you want keep going back to the same spot until you succeed Wild Animals never do what you want them to do, you need to gain there trust
