Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in a friend's garden located in the seacoast area of New Hampshire.

Time

It was taken between the hours of 8-9 am.

Lighting

The lighting was soft as the sun rose on this slightly overcast morning. There was enough filtered sun to illuminate the flowers and stems creating some nice rim light. I took the picture as the sun emerged from behind the clouds.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7000 camera with a 50mm prime lens attached. No flashes or filters were used and the setting were: ISO 100, f/2.8, 1/1000 sec. I used a rock to steady the camera. I was lying on my stomach with my chin in the dirt to get the best vantage point:)

Inspiration

I belong to private Facebook photography group which offers a challenge to members to post a picture every day based on a theme. The theme for this particular day was "A worm's eye view". I knew I would have to get "down and dirty" to achieve this.

Editing

I process primarily in Lightroom. The original photo was in full rich color which I loved but I played with color, contrast, luminance shifts to achieve this final result which appealed to me. I love the soft tones and lighting here.

In my camera bag

It's been just a year since I bought my Nikon D7000 and I have been using editing software for only a few months. There is so much to learn but the photography bug has hit me and there's no going back. I continue to participate in the Facebook Daily Challenge while learning new techniques and programs. In addition to my Nikkor 50 mm 1.4 G prime lens have a Nikkor 18-25mm kit lens, a 70-300 mm 4.5-5.6 Nikkor lens and my two recent additions are a Nikkor 105mm 2.8 micro lens and a Nikkor 70-200 2.8 lens which is now my primary lens. I have a few filters (ND,CPF) and of course a tripod. I carry my camera bag wherever I go except in extreme weather conditions.

Feedback

The trick here was to have soft, low natural light behind the flowers. Getting very low to the ground was also important. Becoming comfortable with editing has been a huge factor. I play with the tone curves and luminance quite a lot and once I achieve an effect that suits me I stop.
