Location
I took this photo in an art studio that I was sharing with several other artists. My actual space there was basically a tiny cubicle so I would often have to do my projects in the main area of the room - about a ten foot square with no windows.Time
It was in the afternoon but like I said, we were in a tiny space with no windows so the time of day didn't really matter. The good thing about that small poorly lit space was that it made it easier to get that dark cramped feel that I was going for!Lighting
I used a single softbox as my light source. There were some overhead track lights up in the ceiling but they were so dim they didn't have much effect on what we were doing. I positioned the softbox above and to one side, trying to create deep shadows on the subject.Equipment
I shoot with a Nikon D800 with an 85mm 1.8 lens that rarely leaves my camera. Someday I want to get the 1.4 but for now I am very happy with the one that I have! For this shot there was no flash, no tripod, just me and my camera. I knelt so that I was directly across from him and used a low aperture to accentuate the sharp contrast of the light on his face and eyes where I was focused.Inspiration
I am extremely insecure and uncomfortable in front of a camera. I absolutely hate having my picture taken (blasphemy, I know!) and it makes me feel extremely vulnerable. When I was talking to AJ about it (the subject) he opened up about some of his insecurities and how he would "become someone else" when in front of a camera or performing. This photo was our attempt to capture that reality of vulnerability and truth of emotion. He smeared his face with paint and makeup to illustrate the things we hide behind or "underneath." As we were shooting I asked him to think about the things he was afraid of, what made him feel insecure or vulnerable or naked, the things he did not want other people to see.Editing
I darkened the shadows and deepened the contrast to add depth, but other than that there was not really any editing to do.In my camera bag
I feel like my bag gets heavier and heavier every week! I promise I am not a hoarder! I have my camera with the 85mm on it, a couple of other lenses depending on what I am shooting, my sb700 flash, extra batteries, business cards, a flash drive, a pocket knife, safety pins, bobby pins (I seriously don't know what I would do without safety pins and bobby pins - they are the ultimate lifesavers!), a UV filter, lens cleaning cloth, my x-rite passport color checker and probably a couple of other random things but I feel like I have shared enough.Feedback
I love using a single light source for black and white photos. I think it adds so much dimension to a photo with the way you can create and manipulate shadow. I would recommend just experimenting and seeing what you can do, move the light around as you shoot instead of keeping it in one safe place. The softbox I used here was a Westcott that I got on sale and didn't cost me much at all and it is one of my absolute favorite light sources. I also think it is important to connect with your subjects, to be able to guide them to where you want them to go. I believe that someone can be absolutely stunning but if there is no emotion and no depth to be seen then it becomes forgetful.
