Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in an abandoned US navy base called Roosevelt Roads in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, while filming NBC's Crossbones, a TV series starring John Malkovich.

Time

I took it around 5pm.

Lighting

Lucky for me we had many clouds that day with helped to get that dramatic vibe.

Equipment

I was shooting from a dinghy with my trusty Canon 5D Mark III and the always reliable Canon L 35mm f1.4.

Inspiration

I didn't always have permission to jump off the boat and shoot from the dinghy. Our captain would always put our safety first so we needed perfect conditions to do so. That's the reason why even tho I sailed on the galleon for almost two years I don't have many photos of the ship sailing. Any time I could was a gift and I tried to make it count.

Editing

I edit all my photos on Lightroom Classic and I've been doing so for over a decade. Just basic editing on exposure and contrast and then a black and white preset I created for this project. I was tempted to delete some of the modern features in the back but I liked it like it was.

In my camera bag

I've been shooting Canon for over a decade, but now I mostly shoot Fujifilm. I love how light its X series cameras are and they something different. Now I shoot with a Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T10, mostly with the Fujinon 23mm f.2 and the wonderful 35mm f.2 I still keep my Canon 5D Mark III with I only use now when I do live dance photography along with the Canon 70-200mm f2.8.

Feedback

Well I don't think you'd find easily a tall ship like this one to shoot, but if you do so remember to shoot over 1/500s to avoid blur and use a polarized filter if you can to filter the reflections of the sun on the water (I didn't). Find trustworthy and experienced teammates when you practice in open seas and make sure to protect your camera with a plastic bag, if you don't have any other means.
