Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small town in Scotland called Saltcoats. Over in the distance is the town of Ardrossan, hence the name of this photo.

Time

This is a really old photo, so I can only remember vaguely. I think it was taken at around 10pm. It was a really nice and calm night, warm too. The calmness is what created the water to be so smooth, and the fact that the exposure was 138 seconds.

Lighting

The only light I had was street lights. if you were here in person at the same time, everything around would be very dark. This is why I chose to do such a long exposure, so I could capture a lot more light and create a clean image instead of shooting my ISO up to 1600.

Equipment

For this image, I used my Sony A77, Sony 16-50mm f2.8 lens, a Redsnapper tripod, no flash.

Editing

Yes. I mainly used Lightroom 5 to process this image. The sky and water was really orange due to the light pollution, so I slid down the temperature to get rid of the orange and made it blue.

In my camera bag

The main equipment I always take with my is: my Sony A77, 16-50mm f2.8 lens. This lens is great for landscapes, as it has a very wide angle. It's also great for portraits with it's wide f2.8 aperture. My tripod is also always with me, as I am a fan of long exposure photography, so really need this to prevent camera shake.

Feedback

Try get out on a cloudy night, this will render the sky to have a sense of motion. Also, a calm night would be on your list to, as this will keep the water from looking nice n smooth. Keep your ISO low, for this image I use an ISO of 50. See the start burst effect in the distance? Well, that was created with an f stop of f/16.
