Thanks! yes it just rained. No I didn't use a black light but good idea - colours are mainly result of the HDR.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a alleyway in Melbourne, Australia, looking toward Fed Square.

Time

This was taken around midday on a rainy afternoon.

Lighting

It was very overcast.

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D. Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6 dc hsm. Manfrotto lightweight tripod. Sutter release.

Inspiration

I spent a few days in Melbourne walking the city and taking photos. I love HDR and as soon as I found this ally I knew the fluorescent colours would look great, contrasting against the dark sky and the rain slicked cobbled ally.

Editing

This image has been quite "cooked". I took 5 bracketed photos ranging from -2 to +2 and processed it in a few different ways in Photomatix. One High contrast desaturated method for the cobbled street, one super saturated method for the fluorescent graffiti, one for the sky and one for the building at the end of the street. I then combined the four resulting images from Photomatix in Photoshop and blended them into the shot you see.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot go gear... - Canon 7D - Sigma 8-16mm - Canon 50mm f1.8 - Manfrotto tripod - shutter release, and of course I never go anywhere without my light painting tools.

Feedback

Finding the right location is a good start, however I feel this image gets its impact from the processing so... Less is more, When is comes to HDR don't over do it and try to keep the image almost realistic. When using post processing programs such as Photomatix there is no reason why you can't process multiple times for certain parts of the image. After you finish processing an image take a break for a few hours and then revisit the shot. I find the eye can become fatigued, especially dealing with bright colours. You might find that when you return to the image the intensity or sharpness needs to be toned down a little before you print or post. And most importantly, relax and have fun!!
