Location
I was living in Bandung, Indonesia at the time. Bandung is a mountain city built in the crater of an old volcano. A welcoming place full of welcoming people. If I was up early enough and the sky was clear, the view from the balcony of my house would be this image and the start of my day.Time
Just after 6am. Sometimes the sun would be blindingly bright and cut through the sky. This particular morning I took a picture just before the sun broke over the mountain tops.Lighting
I'd never quite seen a sunrise like Bandung had to offer. I wanted to capture this picture for quite some time but the sun was always very direct on. I wanted to show the warmth and stillness of the morning. Also the energy and comfort of Bandung and my connection to it. Placing my hand in the shot gave me that sense of connection. I am part Indonesian and in particular Sundanese of which Bandung is a hometown in a way.Equipment
I shot this with a Panasonic Lumix GH3 and an Olympus m4/3 12mm at f2.2. Handheld.Inspiration
Coming to Bandung was like a new beginning for me and waking up there everyday was such a blessing. I wanted to capture that.Editing
Post processing was minimal. A few touches in light room was all that it needed. In my camera bag
Currently I work with a Panasonic GH4 and a few lenses. An Olympus 12mm , a voightlander 25mm which I absolutely love. A sigma 30mm canon ef mount, a Contax Zeiss 50mm and a few Canon FD lenses.Feedback
Finding somewhere special for you is important for a shot like this. Don't wait too long. Take the shot there and then.
