Behind The Lens

Location

I traveled to Oberstdorf,Germany in 2013 to go on a photography-hiking-trip and took this photo at the top of the Nebelhorn (one of the more famous mountains in Germany). From where the door stands I started my hike to the lake below - the Seealpsee.

Time

That day I got up early, as I wanted to spend the whole day hiking in the mountains. I took this photograph early in the day at around 10 o'clock. The sun was already shining bright, but had still some of the soft morning light left.

Lighting

This is one of my personal favorites of mine, even though it was not taken at sunrise or sunset. The sun did light the whole scene pretty evenly and gives it that feeling of a warm summer day.

Equipment

Most of my images - and this is true for this one - are shot with my Nikon D7000 and the Sigma 17-70mm (C). As the sun was shining bright I did not need a tripod or any other equipment. I was able to shoot at the lowest ISO (100) with at 22mm, ƒ/9 and 1/200s.

Inspiration

I was not aware of the door standing at the top of the Nebelhorn. When I arrived there I was just in awe and immediately fell in love with that old wooden door. It was standing there as if it had been there forever. The lake below the door and that mountain range in the backdrop were inspiration enough and so I just took a few shots to capture the scene the way I saw it. For me this image is less about intense sunset colours, but more about what the door stands for - the deeper meaning of it. For me that is new opportunities and experiences - that the door to a new world is always open and you just need to take a chance.

Editing

For this image there was no post-processing necessary. Normaly I run all my photography through Lightroom and Photoshop to control the shadows and highlights, add some contrast and make basic color corrections. However, this particular photograph came out of the camera just as I wanted it to look - no adjustments needed.

In my camera bag

Besides my trusted Nikon D7000 and the Sigma 17-70mm (C), I always pack my tripod (Feisol with Triopo Ballhead) and some filters (Neutral Density and Polarizer). I also own a Nikkor 70-300mm, which I rarely use, but have in my bag to be there when I may need it. More important are spare batteries and memory cards, which I always carry with my camera gear. I like to travel as light as possible, as most of the time I need to carry it the whole day.

Feedback

I really just sumbled upon this door by suprise. Most professionall photographers give the advice to go out shooting, because that is the only way you will get better. I think it is the same with capturing scenes like this. You cannot find something new, if you are not out there exploring. Sometimes you need to travel and sometimes you can find great spots in your neighborhood. Maybe you can get some hints on the internet for good photography locations, but in the end you have to go out there and see for yourself. That is the advice I would give: get out there and explore.
