This photo was taken in Germiston, East of Johannesburg, South Africa (City of Gold) at one of the last remaining steam workshops in South Africa. It is currently the home of Reefsteamers and is used for the original purpose built but on a smaller scale… That is to keep steam locomotives on the rails.Time
Reefsteamers has an annual winter photo shoot session where locomotives are steamed up and used for shunting purposes to allow photographers the opportunity to make use of the excellent Highveld winter weather and cold temperatures to photograph steam locomotives in a often romantic environment. This photograph was shot at 06h30 on a Saturday morning, sunrise on the higveld.Lighting
Golden Hour. I wanted to create the scene from the railways of yesteryear, steam and smoke billowing from the train, golden light bouncing off the heavy plume of smoke. Having the train out in early morning cold brings out the steam you see in the picture and the sun rising, the sun’s natural light is the key to everything in the photo, it enhances the smoke trail and gives you the perfect setting of the train locomotive, coming down the lines.Equipment
Camera: NIKON D7000 Aperture: f/16.0 ISO: 320 Exposure: 1/100 Hand held shot with a 10-20mm Sigma wide angle lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I love the old and broken, the derelict and the forgotten, it makes for the best photographs. And nothing looks better than the old steam trains of yesteryear and , especially if you are able to capture it in all its glory, so when I heard about Reefsteamers, who restore old steam locomotives and keep them from being forgotten forever, I jumped at getting hold of them and finding out when it would be available to shoot. Once a year this beautiful steam train locomotive takes flight for this perfect photo.Editing
I use post processing on most of my images, using Lightroom to clean the batch and Photoshop to do final touches. In this image, I used only Lightroom, to enhance the image and a graduated filter to work the sky. Otherwise the rest is as I shot it.In my camera bag
Nikon D7000, 10-20mm Sigma Lens, my wide angle is my lens of preference, as a landscape photographer, it is always ready to be picked up in a moment’s notice. In the photo taken, I always knew what equipment I was going to use and new it would give the right look and feel Nikon Speed light SB700 Nikon D700, 24mm Sigma Lens ND 8x filterFeedback
Plan in your mind what you see happening in the photo. Plan your shot, research your subject, follow the natural lines, work with your leading lines, draw your viewer into the photograph, and make them feel they back in the aged of the industrial revolution. It’s all about what you want to come out of your image.
