Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a track on the farm where we live in Devon.

Time

This photo was taken between 7 and 8pm during April when the light was starting to fade. The slight chill in the air was the reason my son was wearing the coat.

Lighting

The sun was setting and the soft lighting was near perfect. With my son facing the setting sun, the pinks and oranges of the setting sun diffused through cloud was what I was looking for. I'd been watching the light develop for almost an hour before.

Equipment

Nikon D3s camera body, Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens, handheld and no flash or reflector

Inspiration

This work is part of a series titled 'Just Sundays' which documents my relationship with my children since my divorce. Not being able to spend every day with them, the changes as they grow and develop become more noticeable.

Editing

Very light post-processing with added contrast and punch to the colours and some slight dodge to the shadows.

In my camera bag

Nikon D3s body, 50mm, 35mm, 85mm prime lenses, 70-200 zoom and 16-35mm zoom.

Feedback

It's about knowing your subject and waiting for the right lighting and conditions to capture the shot. With portraits it's having that rapport and connection with the subject that helps create the depth and impact. Think in advance the setting, composition, and lighting that you want and wait for the moment when they all come together. Be aware of the reflection of light in the subject’s eyes and reposition to capture it just right.
