Location
This image was taken in a park in Barcelona.Time
It was 13:53 on a sunny day. Lucky for me it was nap time for the homeless man on the bench.Lighting
It was a very sunny, blue sky day, and although it was nearly 2pm the light was very strong. The trees above the subject afforded a very good filtering effect, with just enough highlight and shadow to bring out the texture in the hands. The angle of the light also brought out the texture in the cloths. The diffusion through the leaves gave the nails the exact reproduction I wanted by bringing out the grime from under the nails.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, with a 70-200mm, hand held at 1/125sec.Inspiration
When I saw the grime filled pores with the the nails showing days without washing, I felt that these hands symbolised the life this man was leading. Hard times had created the image that was displayed before me.Even with the state that they were in, there was a relaxed feeling about them, no tension or pain. The life these hands were living showed in every crease, grime filled pore and gritty fingernail.Editing
I made the image black and white as I felt it gave more impact to the subject. In my camera bag
I carry an 85mm Canon Prime f1.2, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm 2.8 and now a 11-24mm f4.0. I have 2 bodies Canon EOS 1D X and a Canon 5Ds R. I have the Canon 550EX Speedlight. 2 card cases with 4 32Gig cards in each. An air pump and fibre cloth to keep my lenses clean. Depending what I am shooting I will also carry a set of filters.Feedback
Always be on the lookout for the little details, it is very easy to miss the little things when taking it the whole scene. I set myself a goal every time I go out shooting to bring back at least one tiny detail image. This gets me to focus better on what is around me. When I am in a place that on the surface looks like it has nothing to offer, I set myself a quest to come away with one image that makes my day. This can be a texture in a stone, or a tiny reflection on a shiny surface. The possibilities are endless. Don't walk past what could be your best image of the day.
